What is the pharmaceutical drug Actos (Pioglitazone)?
For more than a decade, doctors have been prescribing Actos to patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 to help control blood sugar levels. It has been prescribed for use alone, as well as in conjunction with drugs such as metformin and insulin. Actos has also been used to treat patients with fatty liver, but in such instances this was considered ‘experimental’ treatment. Unfortunately, Actos is not entirely safe. While the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has not issued a drug recall, they have issued a safety announcement warning to patients highlighting the most common dangerous side effects of taking Actos.
What is the problem with the Actos?
Actos was introduced to the American market in 1999; as of 2007, Actos had become one of the top selling pharmaceutical drugs in the United States, selling over $2.4 billion worth nationwide. However, certain individuals are prone to complications with drugs such as Actos—the result of which can be a number of serious health complications. The biggest risks are associated with the higher likelihood of developing bladder cancer and / or a recurrence of bladder cancer.
In a study by the manufacturer of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the FDA found significant correlations between patients taking Actos versus other drugs; they documented a significant correlation to the drug and bladder tumors and bladder cancer. As a result of study, France, India, and Germany chose to recall the drug from their markets in order to minimize patient risks. The FDA has decided to continue to study the risks / potential benefits and caution patients to look closely at the severe potential side effects.
