In 2004, Merck withdrew the pain-relief drug Vioxx from the market because studies associated usage of Vioxx with increased risks of strokes, heart attacks, and blood clots. Previously, doctors had commonly prescribed Vioxx because it offered advantages over traditional NSAIDs. However, the serious, undisclosed side effects outweighed any benefit that Vioxx® and other COX-2 inhibitors offered.
