The Side Effects of Taking PPIs Over Time

What Are The Long-Term Effects Of Taking PPIs?

Since their approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989, proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) have proven effective in treating chronic heartburn, peptic ulcer disorder (PUD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced gastropathy.

However, studies link long-term use of these drugs to a number of frightening side effects and complications—some irreversible.

As a result, the FDA issued a recommendation that patients avoid taking more than three 14-day cycles of the medications in a single year. Unfortunately, this recommendation can't turn back the clock for those already suffering from a serious health condition caused by long-term PPI use.

Long-Lasting PPI Side Effects and Complications

Long-term use of PPI drugs such as Prilosec® and Nexium® can cause temporary symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, rashes, and low-magnesium levels, as well as a range of debilitating and sometimes irreversible complications, including:

  • Kidney problems, such as kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and kidney failure
  • Gastrointestinal issues, such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, severe chronic diarrhea, and difficulty absorbing nutrients
  • Osteoporosis leading to bone fractures
  • Increased risk of infections and pneumonia
  • Artery damage
  • Dementia
  • Heart attack
  • Death

Approximately 20 percent of Americans suffer from acid-related disorders, and many of these people rely on PPIs to treat their conditions. Patients concerned about the potential side effects of lengthy use of PPIs can talk to their doctors about other, safer alternatives.
