Did Your Composix or Composix Ex Fail?
Developed and sold by DAVOL, the Composix and Composix EX hernia mesh implants both have something in common with each other and all of the DAVOL hernia mesh line-they are double layered. One layer uses polypropylene to promote tissue growth at the insertion site. The other layer is made of ePTFE. A critical component of Gore-Tex, the ePTFE layer is advertised to reduce the risk of adhesion with this implant.
Common Problems with Hernia Repairs
Complications following a hernia repair range from 1-10 percent. Issues can include:
- Mild skin irritation
- Deep mesh infection
- Reoccurrence of a hernia
- Seroma
- Hematoma
- Chronic pain
- Loss of a testicle
With any surgery comes the risk of infection at the incision site, anesthetic risks like heart attack or stroke, swelling, bruising, allergic reactions and more. The list above is specific to complications that can develop with a hernia revision surgery. Hernia mesh adds in the risk of adhesion, movement of the implant, implant failure, bowel perforation and more.
Repairs versus Revisions for a Hernia
While hernia mesh is advertised to reduce the incidence of reoccurrence by half, the complications associated with hernia mesh can be much more serious. These increased risk factors have led to several Composix and Composix EX lawsuits.
Symptoms of a Failing Implant
Composix and Composix EX lawsuits are in progress in part due to the fact that these mesh implants are still available on the market, even with known complaints about long-term effectiveness. DAVOL has issued 10 Class 1 and 2 medical device recalls on other hernia mesh products, including the Kugel Hernia Patch. While Composix and Composix EX hernia mesh implants do not have the memory recoil ring listed as the point of failure in the Class 1 recalls for the Kugel Hernia Patch, many of the same issues have been reported. If you experience bloating or trouble going to the bathroom, heat or swelling at the incision site, a lump at the site of the original hernia, nausea, fever, vomiting, fistula, or other unexplained abdominal symptoms, it can be a sign that your mesh is failing.
