What Questions Should I Ask When Hiring an Attorney?

Consulting with an Attorney: Questions to Ask

Hiring an attorney typically doesn’t mean hiring the first attorney you interview. Typically, it’s a process of interviewing multiple attorneys. When first consulting with an attorney, asking questions can help you in determining whether an attorney is a good fit for your case or not. What questions should you ask a prospective attorney? Below, we lay out a few questions you can ask a prospective attorney to see if they’re a good match for your circumstances.

How Long Have You Practiced Law?

The number of years an attorney has practiced law doesn’t always equal their ability to handle a case. But seasoned attorneys typically have seen more cases and know how to tackle different legal challenges that may pop up in and out of the courtroom. See how many years of experience your prospective attorney has under their belt before hiring them to your case.

What Types of Cases Do You Usually Handle?

Having an attorney with case experience that fits your needs is important. For example, if you harmed by a dangerous drug, like Invokana, and your attorney typically handles divorce cases, a different attorney might be better for your case.

What are Your Attorney Fees and Costs

Finding an attorney that fits your budget and financial situation is incredibly important. Assessing whether you can afford your attorney’s services or how you will be required to pay are all factors to be considered. In many mass tort cases, you pay nothing for an attorney’s services until they win or settle your case; this is called a contingency fee. When working on a contingency fee basis, the cost of your attorney’s services will come out of the amount of compensation awarded to you; but this is only if you win your case. Check with your prospective attorney to see if they work on a contingency fee basis or if they offer other payment plans.
