Is Xarelto® safe to use?

Xarelto (rivaroxaban), manufactured by Bayer and marketed in the United States by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, is a popular anticoagulant prescribed to prevent blood clots and stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). This drug is also used to treat pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis in hip or knee replacement patients.

Although the Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in 2011, recent studies have shown that in some patients, Xarelto thins the blood too much, resulting in uncontrollable—and irreversible—bleeding.

Xarelto Side Effects

While major bleeding events are one of the most severe side effects associated with Xarelto, they’re by no means the only adverse effects Xarelto patients have experienced. Research shows that Xarelto may also increase a patient’s risk of developing an infection after surgery. Additionally, the drug can cause a wide variety of side effects, including:

  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Numbness
  • Tingling or pain in the extremities
  • Itching
  • Weakness
  • Bladder or bowel dysfunction
  • Trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Inability to control movements
  • Reduced platelet levels
  • Abnormal liver function

The safety of the drug depends heavily on the patient’s tolerance to it. Not all patients who take Xarelto experience these side effects. If you’re currently taking Xarelto, watch for any unusual symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if you have:

  • Frequent nose bleeds
  • Excessive bleeding of the gums
  • Unusually heavy menstrual periods
  • Red, pink, or brown urine
  • Red or black tarry stool
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomiting what looks like coffee grounds

Patients who are concerned about possible Xarelto should ask their doctor about alternative treatments.
