JUUL Addiction Lawsuits to be Scheduled for Trial in 2022

The U.S. District Judge overseeing all JUUL addiction lawsuits announced the first trial in the litigation will likely go before a trial in early 2022. Currently over 900 product liability lawsuits have been filed in the federal court system over claims that JUUL vaping pods caused young adults and teens to develop severe nicotine addictions and injuries.

On August 21, U.S. District Judge William H. Orrick III held a status conference addressing the development of JUUL addiction lawsuits in the steadily growing litigation. At this time, all federal lawsuits against JUUL Labs for vaping pod addiction are centralized in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. JUUL Labs Inc.’s San Francisco headquarters are also located in this region.

Claims filed in the litigation raise allegations that JUUL targeted teens through false and misleading advertisement campaigns, addicting a new generation to nicotine. Along with the addiction claims, many JUUL lawsuits allege the vaping company’s vaping pods caused severe injuries including respiratory failure, strokes, and seizures.

Judge Orrick indicated that he anticipates the first bellwether trial date in the JUUL litigation to start in February 2022. Originally, these early trials were hoped to begin by the end of 2021. However, with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the judicial system, scheduling issues pushed out the start of trial dates to early 2022.

“While the Court had hoped that the first bellwether trial could be held at the end of 2021, given the pandemic and trial scheduling issues February 2022 may be more realistic,” Judge Orrick indicated in the minutes of the latest status conference.

As JUUL injury lawyers continue to review and file claims, experts anticipate that hundreds, if not, thousands of additional JUUL addiction claims will be filed in the JUUL litigation.
