Stryker Recalls over 200 Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants

Stryker has More Metal-on-Metal Hip Recalls Than Any Other Manufacturer

As attorneys continue to review metal-on-metal (MoM) hip implant lawsuits, new reports indicate Stryker Corporation faces over 200 product liability claims in the federal courts. Each of these claims raises similar allegations that several models of the manufacturer’s MoM hip implants caused severe complications and injuries.

According to Drugwatch, an informational service on high-risk medical products, Stryker had 231 hip implant recalls from 2002 to 2013, more than any other MoM manufacturer. Stryker was closely followed in high recalls by DePuy Synthes Companies at 150, and Zimmer Biomet at 104.

These companies produced hip implants with unique metal-on-metal designs. Metal-on-metal means the implant components were made of metal alloy and fit together with other metal alloy implants. Medical manufacturers like Stryker sold these hip implants by the thousands, quickly becoming a popular option for hip implant surgeries.

However, reports quickly flooded in that MoM hip implants were prone to failure and increase patients’ likelihood of needing revision surgery. Injury reports indicated MoM hip implants cracked, fractured, and failed inside of patients requiring them to undergo painful revision surgery to replace the failed implant.

Two of Stryker’s devices that face hundreds of product liability lawsuits in federal courts are the Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Implants. In 2012, about three years after these implants were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Stryker issued a voluntary recall of the devices. Stryker received post-marketing data that the metal modular necks and stems of these devices corroded and fretted. This device wear-and-tear released excessive metal ions into the body causing tissue damage, bone death, and a type of metal poisoning called metallosis.

Unfortunately, Stryker’s recalls came far too late for thousands of patients across the U.S. Patients who received Stryker MoM implants complained their implant shell loosened and caused injuries including hip pain, infection at the site of the implant, and need for revision surgery to fix their failed implant.
