Some Heartburn Drugs May Cause Heart and Kidney Damage

Proton-pump inhibitors, or “PPIs,” are often prescribed for the treatment of heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease, ulcers, and other gastro-intestinal issues. Some common brand names include Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid, and Protonix, but there are many prescription or over-the-counter medications that share similar active ingredients.

While these medications do help lower stomach acid and relieve patients’ symptoms, there has been a growing concern about the potentially life-threatening side effects associated with PPIs. Especially in cases of long-term use, research has indicated a link between PPIs and an increased risk of heart attacks, kidney damage, infections, and lowered bone density or fractures.

Lawsuits from families around the nation have now been filed against several of the manufacturers of these medications. They claim that these companies failed to warn the public of the potentially dangerous side effects of PPIs and that they used unethical marketing practices to promote the drugs. Our law firm is currently reviewing cases from families who have been affected and helping them determine if they have the right to hold the manufacturers responsible for the costs of their medical bills, pain and suffering, and other losses.

While many medications come with side effects, doctors and patients need to be informed about the risk so that they can make the best decisions for a patient’s wellbeing. The lawsuits against PPI manufacturers claim that proper warning of the drug’s dangers would have allowed patients to seek safer alternatives for heartburn treatment—or at least watch more closely for signs of potential problems while taking the drug.
